Christianity Explored
For several years, Daylight has been working closely with Christianity Explored to deliver the Christianity Explored and Discipleship Explored courses to prisoners across the UK in a way that suits a prison audience. Because many offenders struggle with literacy problems and learning difficulties, Daylight and CE have been working hard to develop a version of the course which is understandable for every prisoner.
The team responsible for developing the new course is led by Stephen James, Director of Prison ministry at Christianity Explored. Having spent four years inside prison himself, Stephen is acutely aware of the problems faced when trying to run a course which engages prisoners with the Christian faith. Along with Gillian Pegler, also working with Christianity Explored, Stephen has developed various courses which can be adapted to different prison contexts and time slots. They use visual and creative methods to engage prisoners with the material and are piloting their courses across the UK during 2011.
Along with Daylight, Stephen and Gillian have been able to train volunteers in prisons across the UK to run the Christianity Explored course in a suitable way for prisoners. They continue to train Daylight’s prison volunteers and develop the Christianity Explored and Discipleship Explored courses using the experience they gain. Stephen and Sarah, from Daylight, were able to run the first seminar in how to run a Christianity Explored course in a prison context at the COPE conference in Scotland in June 2010.
These courses will eventually be made widely available for all Daylight’s prison workers to use in their local prison.
Please continue to pray for Daylight and Christianity Explored as we work together to reach more prisoners with the good news of Jesus Christ.
